A pressure switch is a control device that opens or closes an electrical circuit when the pressure of a liquid or gas in a system reaches a preset value. It is one of the most widely used instruments for protecting equipment and automating processes in water, air and industrial systems.
How a Pressure Switch Works
The process pressure acts on a diaphragm or piston inside the switch. When the pressure rises or falls to the set point, the movement of this element, balanced against an adjustable spring, operates an electrical contact. A separate differential setting controls the gap between the cut-in and cut-out pressures, which prevents the equipment from switching on and off too frequently.
Uses of Pressure Switches
Pressure switches are commonly used to start and stop pumps and air compressors, to protect equipment against high or low pressure, and to maintain the required pressure in booster sets, water tanks, boilers, refrigeration and HVAC systems, hydraulic units and industrial machinery.
